Winton Global Lumber Plans for Temporary Shutdown
Earlier this week, Winton Global Lumber announced restart dates for both sawmill and planer operations following a 2 to 3 month shutdown caused by the Nechako River ice jam, flooding and flood risks to employees and facilities at our planer site.
The sawmill and planer will operate for approximately 3 months in the March to June period, processing logs currently in inventory. Following this period, due to the on-going poor market and economic conditions in the forest industry, the Company will need to, once again, temporarily shutdown its lumber production operations.
Although the cessation of operations in June will be temporary, no date has been set for subsequent resumption. The Company continues to look for opportunities that will enable resumption of operations in the near term.
The Company regrets this difficult decision given its impact on our employees, contractors, customers and the general community. This decision is necessary at this time to preserve the options for future re-opening. The Company plans to maintain its milling facilities and to resume operations once the market conditions in the forest industry improve to sustainable levels.
Winton Global Homes operations are not impacted by this decision and will continue without interruption.
